Copper Coast Geopark

The Copper Coast is a stretch of the southern coast of Ireland in County Waterford.Copper Coast location
The Copper Coast Global Geopark BoundaryIt is named for the historic metal-mining industry, the legacies of which now constitute a tourist attraction. This geologically diverse area contains records of Palaeozoic volcanism and the last ice age.
The area was declared a European Geopark in 2001 and a UNESCO supported Global Geopark in 2004. At 90 square kilometres the Copper Coast is about the smallest Geopark in the Network.

69 territories across Europe are designated as European Geoparks. They all use and promote their geology and facets of other heritage (archaeology, culture, fauna & flora) as  tools for ecological tourism in their own area. Within the European Geoparks Network, the different partners meet regularly to share their experience and expertise on conservation, all forms of local heritage, education and tourism, and drawing all of these together to enhance the sense of pride in place of each of their geoparks.
This is the complete list of members of the European Geoparks Network on the EGN website.

The Geopark designation was created by UNESCO in 1999 as a "seal of excellence" for "selected territories around the world which integrate the preservation of extraordinary examples of the geological heritage of our planet in a strategy of regional economic development".  As of September, 2015, there are 120 Global Geoparks – 69 in Europe, 47 in the Asia – Pacific area and 4 in America.
And now! 195 Member States of UNESCO have ratified the creation of a new label, the UNESCO Global Geoparks, on 17 November 2015. This expresses governmental recognition of the importance of managing outstanding geological sites and landscapes in a holistic manner.

In Geoparks we maintain a watching brief on all things to do with our environment, but particularly our geology.
We do ask that you only take away your memories and photos, and that you don't remove any fossils, rocks or minerals.

Our local authority, Waterford Council, have an important role in the care and protection of our geology.  Click here...
